The MoMA Junior Associates… the New Museum… ArtTable… the Professional Organization of Women in the Arts… the Whitney Contemporaries… There are hundreds of patron and membership groups that one can join in pursuit of the golden god, Contemporary Art. After all, what could be better than proximity to inspired works of art? The answer: companionship with like-minded individuals who seek the same art-induced high. That’s why Blaise + Co. wants to know… how do you choose to spend your dollars and time? How do you decipher which clubs, whether they charge a membership fee or are completely free, are worth your attention? Unfortunately we’ve all got to narrow down the numerous options because you can’t mean everything to everyone. You’ve got to figure out what your actual interest is and zero in on it. I think we can all agree that nothing is worse than seeing someone’s name crop up on every single benefit list, members group and patron package. Much better to spend some time determining what you genuinely love, whether it’s artist studio visits or philanthropic-minded events, and making a sincere go of giving it your undivided attention. That’s not to say you can’t change your mind or add a few groups as you go along – we’re not condemning you to a life of Long Duck Dong; just don’t be that jerk with your name on every “in” list. All the cool kids know trying too hard is “so out.”
